1. What Groove Is
Groove is the difference between a beat that sounds like a spreadsheet and a beat that makes your head nod. It's not a single setting — it's a collection of small imperfections that add up to human feel. A quantized beat (every hit exactly on the grid, every hit the same volume) sounds robotic. A grooved beat has variation: some hits slightly early, some slightly late, some loud, some soft, some occasionally missing, some doubled.
ESSNCE gives you six tools for groove: swing, velocity, micro-timing, probability, flam/roll, and humanize. Used individually, they add subtle variation. Used together, they make programmed drums indistinguishable from a live drummer.
2. Swing
Swing delays every other step by a percentage. At 0%, every step is evenly spaced (straight feel — house, techno, trap). At 50–70%, the off-beat steps are delayed enough to create a triplet feel (hip-hop, boom-bap). At 100%, the delay is a full triplet — full shuffle.
- Swing applies globally to the pattern. For per-track swing, use the track assign sheet (long-press a track label).
- The classic hip-hop bounce is 25–35% swing. The snare on beats 2 and 4 hits slightly late, creating that lazy, behind-the-beat feel.
- Most electronic genres use 0% swing (house, techno, drum & bass). Adding even 10% swing to a house beat makes it feel more organic without losing the dancefloor energy.
- Swing + ghost notes: a swung hi-hat pattern with velocity ghost notes (quiet hits between the main hits) is the backbone of lo-fi and boom-bap.
3. Velocity
Velocity is how hard a step hits. In the step grid, brighter orange = louder hit. Drag vertically on any active step to adjust its velocity. In the parameter lock dialog (long-press a step), you can set an exact velocity percentage.
- Velocity affects more than volume: on multi-sampled instruments, higher velocity triggers a different sample (a snare hit hard vs soft). On synth tracks, velocity can open the filter and increase amp contour — making the sound brighter as well as louder.
- A real drummer never hits the snare at exactly the same volume twice. Variation of 5–15% between steps sounds natural. Variation of 50%+ between steps creates accents — the backbeat hits harder than the ghost notes.
- Ghost notes: set velocity to 15–30% for quiet, barely-there hits. Place them between main snare hits for realistic drum fills. The human ear hears the pattern of ghost notes even when they're barely audible — they add texture and movement.
4. Micro-Timing
Micro-timing offsets a step by milliseconds, nudging it slightly before or after the grid. Range: -50ms to +50ms.
- A real drummer has push and pull — some hits rush (ahead of the beat), some drag (behind). The hi-hat often plays slightly ahead of the beat (rushing), creating urgency. The snare often plays slightly behind (dragging), creating weight.
- Try this on a boom-bap pattern: nudge the hi-hats -5ms (slightly ahead) and the snare +8ms (slightly behind). The hi-hats push the groove forward, the snare anchors it. This push-pull tension is what makes a beat feel alive.
- Micro-timing is track-specific in the parameter lock dialog. You can also copy micro-timing from one track to another using Copy Groove (see below).
5. Probability
Probability is the chance a step actually plays. 100% = always plays. 70% = plays roughly 7 out of 10 loops. 50% = coin flip. 25% = rarely plays.
- Use probability to add variation without programming multiple patterns. Set hi-hat ghost notes to 50% probability — every loop, different ghost notes play. The pattern stays recognisable but never repeats exactly.
- Set a crash cymbal on beat 1 of every 4th bar — but give it 25% probability. Most of the time it doesn't play, making it feel like a deliberate choice when it does.
- Probability on a snare fill: every 16th note at 40% velocity with 30% probability. Most hits don't fire, creating a sparse, unpredictable fill.
- Extreme use: set an entire percussion track to 50–70% probability. The track flickers in and out of existence — sometimes dense, sometimes sparse. Great for hi-hats, shakers, and auxiliary percussion.
6. Flam
A flam is a rapid double-hit — a quiet ghost note immediately before the main hit (5–40ms offset). This is a fundamental drumming technique: the stick bounces, creating a "flam" sound.
- Flam on snare backbeats: adds weight and realism. A snare on beat 2 with flam at 15ms sounds like a real drummer hitting with a slight bounce.
- Flam on kicks: adds thickness. The double-hit creates a fatter, longer kick sound.
- Flam on hi-hats at 5ms: almost imperceptible as a double-hit but adds a metallic shimmer to the attack.
- Flam is mutually exclusive with Roll (below).
6b. Roll
A roll subdivides a step into 2, 3, 4, or 6 evenly-spaced hits. This creates a rapid burst — drum roll, hi-hat trill, snare fill.
- 2 hits = double stroke. The simplest roll — sounds like a bounce.
- 3 hits = triplet roll. Feels like a quick triplet within a single step.
- 4 hits = 16th-note roll (within a quarter note) or 32nd-note roll (within an 8th note). Standard drum fill speed.
- 6 hits = sextuplet. Fast, dense — the speed of a professional snare roll.
- Roll + velocity fade: ESSNCE automatically fades velocity across the roll. Multi-sampled instruments sound more realistic as each sub-hit triggers a slightly different sample.
7. Humanize
Humanize is a one-button alternative to adjusting micro-timing manually. It analyses the track and applies subtle, role-appropriate timing variations.
- Role-aware: Kicks get slightly different humanization than snares. Hi-hats get different treatment than percussion. Each role has a built-in profile based on how real drummers play that instrument.
- Humanize presets: Loose (more variation), Tight (subtle variation), and Auto (role-based defaults).
- Undo: Humanize is undoable. If you don't like the result, undo and try a different preset.
- Humanize is best applied after programming the pattern — program clean, quantized, then humanize after. This gives you the best of both worlds: fast programming and human feel.
8. Copy Groove
Copy Groove lifts the micro-timing from one track and applies it to another. This is the MPC-style "copy swing" feature.
- Program a hi-hat pattern with careful micro-timing. Copy its groove to a shaker track. The shaker now has the exact same push-pull feel as the hi-hat — they lock together rhythmically.
- Copy the groove from a reference track (a drum loop you love) by matching its micro-timing manually, then copying that groove to your own tracks.
- The source track is unchanged. Only the target track is modified.
9. Polymeter
Polymeter is when different tracks have different pattern lengths. A 4-step kick pattern against a 3-step hi-hat pattern creates a 12-step cycle (lowest common multiple of 4 and 3) before the patterns realign.
- Set a hi-hat track to 3 steps while the kick stays at 4. The hi-hat cycles faster, drifting against the kick. This creates rhythmic tension that resolves every 12 steps. The listener feels a push-pull.
- Classic polymeter: kick = 4 steps, snare = 4 steps, hi-hat = 5 steps, percussion = 7 steps. Every bar sounds slightly different even though no individual pattern changes.
- Set the pattern length in the track assign sheet (long-press a track label, find 'Track Length').
- Polymeter vs polyrhythm: polymeter = same tempo, different bar lengths. Polyrhythm = different tempos over the same bar length. ESSNCE uses polymeter.
10. Suggestions to Try
- Program a simple kick-snare pattern. Humanize it with the Loose preset. Now add 25% swing. The combination of timing variation and swing makes it sound like a sampled drum break.
- Create a hi-hat pattern with 16th notes at varying velocities (100%, 30%, 80%, 20%, 100%, 30%…). Set every other ghost note to 50% probability. Now the hi-hat dances — always moving, never the same.
- Put a flam on every snare backbeat (beats 2 and 4). Set flam offset to 18ms. Add 10% swing. This is the sound of 90s boom-bap.
- Set up a polymeter: kick (4 steps), snare (4 steps), hi-hat (3 steps), shaker (5 steps). Play it for 30 seconds. Notice how the pattern keeps evolving without you touching anything.
- Copy the groove from a track you've spent time micro-timing into a template track. Save that template. Now every new project can start with your signature groove.
