1. What Are CLAP Plugins?
CLAP stands for CLever Audio Plugin. It's an open standard for audio effects — like VST or AU, but free for anyone to use and implement. A CLAP plugin is a file that contains an effect algorithm. When you load it into ESSNCE, the plugin processes your audio in real time.
Think of plugins as pedalboard effects for your digital audio. Just like a guitarist chains a distortion pedal into a delay pedal into a reverb, you chain CLAP plugins to shape your sound. ESSNCE comes with 17 built-in effects (reverb, delay, compressor, etc.). CLAP plugins let you go beyond the built-ins — load a vintage tube saturator, a shimmer reverb, or a multi-band compressor that someone else built.
CLAP is not owned by any company. It's developed openly on GitHub, and any developer can build plugins for it without paying fees or signing licenses. This means more plugins, from more creators, with no gatekeepers. VST and AU are proprietary — CLAP belongs to everyone.
2. Built-In Effects vs CLAP Plugins
ESSNCE's 17 built-in effects are always available. They're fast, reliable, and cover the essentials. The full list: Reverb, Delay, Chorus, Flanger, Distortion, Low-Pass Filter, High-Pass Filter, Pitch Shift, Compressor, Saturation, Bitcrush, Stutter, Auto-Pan, Tremolo, Time Stretch, Envelope Follower, and Parametric EQ.
CLAP plugins are extras you bring in yourself. They appear alongside the built-in effects — you can mix and match. A chain might be: built-in Compressor → CLAP tube saturator → built-in Reverb. The plugin doesn't know it's running inside ESSNCE — it just processes audio.
3. Where Plugins Work
Plugins can be inserted in several places:
Each pad has its own effects chain. Add a CLAP plugin to a specific pad — only that pad's audio goes through it.
Affects all pads. This is your 'mix bus' — where you'd put a mastering compressor or a final EQ.
Each drum track has its own chain. Put a CLAP saturator on just the kick track, or a special reverb on just the snare.
Affects the entire drum mix.
Each arrange timeline track can have its own CLAP effects.
4. The Plugin Manager (where you manage plugins)
Accessed from the tray drawer (swipe from right edge). This is where you import, browse, and remove plugins.
Import
Tap '+ IMPORT CLAP' and pick a .clap file from your device. CLAP plugins are files — you might download them, get them from a friend, or build your own. The plugin is copied into ESSNCE's plugin directory and scanned.
Rescan
If you've added plugin files manually (e.g., copying them into the plugin folder), tap Rescan to refresh the list.
Plugin information
Each plugin shows its name, vendor (who made it), version, and features (e.g., 'stereo', 'mono', 'MIDI input').
Remove
Delete a plugin you no longer want. This removes it from the plugin directory.
5. Using Plugins in an FX Chain
When you open an FX chain (on a pad, drum track, or editor track), the 'Add Effect' button opens a browser. You'll see two sections: Built-In and Imported. Tap any effect to slot it into the chain.
Order matters
Effects process in order, left to right. Distortion before reverb sounds like a distorted sound in a room. Reverb before distortion sounds like a room being crushed — messy, loud, often unusable but sometimes brilliant.
Audio enters the chain from the left, passes through each effect one at a time, and exits from the right. Each effect receives the output of the previous effect as its input. Changing the order changes the sound completely because each effect transforms the signal before the next one touches it.
Per-effect controls
Tap any effect in the chain to open its parameters. Every plugin exposes its own set of controls — sliders, toggles, dropdowns — that the plugin developer defined. A reverb might have Room Size, Damping, and Width. A compressor has Threshold, Ratio, Attack, Release.
Bypass toggle
Each slot has a bypass button. Toggle it to A/B compare — with effect vs without. Essential for knowing whether the plugin is actually helping.
Reorder
Drag effects up or down to change processing order.
Save presets
Once you've dialled in a plugin's settings, save them as a named preset. Your preset appears in the plugin browser for quick recall. Presets are per-plugin — a 'Tight Snare' compressor preset won't show up in the reverb browser.
6. Smart Test Sources
When you're adjusting a plugin, you want to hear what it's doing. ESSNCE provides smart test sources that play while you tweak:
- Pink noise — For EQs and filters. Flat frequency response — you hear exactly what the EQ is cutting or boosting.
- Drum loop — For compressors and saturators. A full beat shows you how the plugin reacts to transients.
- Snare hit — For reverb. A single sharp hit with silence after — you hear the reverb tail clearly.
The test source auto-selects based on the plugin type. You can switch it manually from the FX chain editor.
7. Practical Examples
Walk through specific use cases:
Example 1: "Vintage Drum Bus"
Chain on the drum master FX: built-in Compressor (gentle 2:1 ratio, fast attack, medium release) → CLAP tube saturator (drive at 30%, output matched) → built-in Parametric EQ (slight boost at 100Hz, slight cut at 300Hz, slight boost at 8kHz). Result: punchy, warm, polished drums that sound like they went through a vintage console.
The compressor evens out the peaks. The saturator adds even-order harmonics — warmth, thickness, a subtle glue that makes the kick, snare, and hats feel like one cohesive unit. The EQ shapes the final tone: the low boost adds weight, the mid cut removes boxiness, the high boost adds air. The drums sound expensive.
Example 2: "Shimmer Pad"
Chain on a sampler pad with a sustained sample: CLAP pitch shifter (octave up, 50% mix) → built-in Reverb (large hall, long decay, 40% mix). Result: the original sound plays, but a ghostly octave-up version shimmers through the reverb tail.
Example 3: "OTT Vocal Crush"
Chain on a sampler pad with a vocal sample: built-in Compressor (aggressive, high ratio) → CLAP multi-band compressor (OTT-style, upwards and downwards compression). Result: the vocal is smashed into a dense, present, radio-ready sound — the classic OTT effect.

CLAP is a growing format. Places to look:

- Many open-source audio developers release CLAP versions alongside VST3
- Some commercial plugin companies now ship CLAP builds
- The CLAP format supports all major plugin types: effects (reverb, delay, dynamics), instruments (synths, samplers), and MIDI processors
9. Suggestions to Try
- Import a CLAP saturator. Put it on the drum master chain. Start with drive at 20% and slowly increase. Notice how the drums go from clean → warm → crunchy → destroyed. Find the sweet spot where they feel thicker but not distorted.
- Chain a CLAP delay (set to dotted 8th note) after a built-in compressor on a lead synth pad. The compressor evens out the volume before the delay repeats — cleaner echoes.
- Put a CLAP EQ before the built-in Reverb. Cut the low frequencies going INTO the reverb. Now the reverb only affects the mids and highs — less muddy, more airy.
- Save a preset for every plugin you use regularly. After a month, you'll have your own signature sound saved as presets — load your 'clean kick' compressor in one tap.
