1. The Sound Designer Mindset

Every sample can become many different sounds. The same acoustic guitar pluck can be a tight percussive hit (short attack, short release), a lush pad (long attack, long release, reverb), or a lo-fi texture (bit-crush, filter, pitch down). Sound design is learning which few controls to reach for to transform one thing into another.

2. Filter Types — What They Cut and Why

LP (Low-Pass): Lets lows through, cuts highs. This is the most musical filter. As you lower the cutoff, the sound gets darker, warmer, more distant. Every classic "filter sweep" is a low-pass opening up. Use LP on: bright samples that need warming, harsh hi-hats that need taming, pads that need to sit back in the mix.

HP (High-Pass): Lets highs through, cuts lows. Use HP on: samples with rumble or mud, kicks that need tightening (cut below 40Hz to clean the sub), pads that are clashing with the bass.

BP (Band-Pass): Only lets a narrow band through — cuts both highs and lows. The sound becomes thin, telephone-like, nasal. Use BP for: lo-fi effects, transitional sounds, isolating a specific frequency for creative mangling.

3. Cutoff and Resonance

Cutoff: The frequency where the filter starts working. On a low-pass, lowering cutoff removes more high frequencies. On a high-pass, lowering cutoff removes more low frequencies. Think of cutoff as the "position" of the filter.

Resonance: A boost at the cutoff frequency. At low values (10-30%), it adds a subtle emphasis — makes the filter point more noticeable. At high values (60-80%), it creates a whistling, squelchy peak. At extreme values (90%+), the filter can self-oscillate — it creates its own tone even with no input. This is the classic acid synth sound.

Try this: Set a low-pass filter with cutoff at 30% and resonance at 70%. Automate the cutoff to slowly rise. The resonance peak sweeps through the frequency spectrum — this is the quintessential electronic music filter sweep.

4. Bitcrush and Sample Rate Reduce

Bitcrush: Reduces the bit depth of the audio. 16-bit is CD quality. 12-bit is vintage sampler (MPC60, SP-1200). 8-bit is crunchy, lo-fi, video game. 4-bit is extreme — audio breaks apart into noise. Each step down adds more digital distortion and reduces dynamic range.

Sample rate reduce: Drops the effective sample rate. Off = 44.1kHz (full range). 2× = 22kHz (loses the highest highs — subtle). 4× = 11kHz (noticeable digital aliasing — metallic ringing artifacts). 8× = 5.5kHz (extreme — sounds like a bad phone connection).

The magic combo: set bitcrush to 8-bit and sample rate to 4×. Then add a low-pass filter with cutoff at 25%. The filter smooths the harsh aliasing while leaving the lo-fi character. This is the "dusty record" sound — warm, degraded, but still musical.

Use bitcrush on: drum breaks (12-bit gives MPC-style punch), pads (8-bit adds texture), vocals (8-bit + LP filter = lofi radio effect), entire mix bus (subtle 12-bit for vintage warmth).

5. ADSR — The Shape of Sound

Every sound has a shape — a beginning, middle, and end. ADSR gives you control over that shape.

Attack: How long the sound takes to reach full volume. 0ms = instant (percussion, plucks). 100-500ms = swelling (pads, strings). 500-2000ms = slow fade-in (ambient textures, reverse effects).

Decay: How long it takes to drop from the peak to the sustain level. Short (10-100ms) = percussive snap. Medium (200-500ms) = natural instrument decay. Long (500ms+) = drawn-out envelope.

Sustain: The volume level while the pad is held. 0% = the sound dies after decay (useful for percussive hits). 100% = the sound stays at full volume. This only matters in GATE or SUSTAIN play modes — in ONE SHOT mode, the sample always plays to the end.

Release: How long the sound takes to fade after releasing the pad. 0-50ms = tight cut (good for chops and stabs). 100-400ms = natural tail. 500-2000ms = long, lingering fade (pads and ambience).

ADSR cheat sheet

Kick: A=0 D=200 S=0 R=50. Snare: A=0 D=100 S=0 R=80. Hi-hat: A=0 D=50 S=0 R=20. Pad: A=300 D=500 S=70 R=800. Pluck: A=0 D=150 S=0 R=100.

6. Time Stretching — Speed Without Pitch Change

Time stretching changes the speed of a sample without changing its pitch. If you stretch a sample to 2×, it plays twice as slow but at the same pitch — the sound is stretched, not pitched down.

Destructive stretch (from the pad overflow menu): 0.5× (half speed), 0.75×, 1.5×, 2.0× (double speed). The result is permanent — the sample is replaced with the stretched version.

Tempo match: ESSNCE detects the BPM of your sample and automatically stretches it to match your project tempo. A 90 BPM drum loop becomes 120 BPM while staying in the same key.

Warp to bars: Stretch a sample to fit exactly 1, 2, 4, or 8 bars. The app calculates the stretch ratio for you.

Stretch modes: OLA (Overlap-Add) — clean, transparent, best for tonal material. Phase Vocoder — better for extreme ratios, preserves harmonics. Auto — the app picks the best algorithm based on the sample type.

Try this: take a 2-bar drum loop at 85 BPM. Load it into a pad. Tempo-match it to your project at 120 BPM. It now plays faster but stays in the same key — instant jungle/breakcore energy.

7. FX Chains — Stacking Effects

Each sampler pad has its own effects chain. Effects process in order, left to right. The order dramatically changes the result.

Common chains:

Per-pad chains vs master chain: Per-pad chains shape individual sounds. The master chain (accessible from the mixer) processes all pads together — this is where you put "glue" effects like bus compression and final EQ.

8. Suggestions to Try

  1. Take a clean vocal sample. Set bitcrush to 8-bit, sample rate reduce to 4×, add a LP filter at 30%, and set the play mode to GATE. You now have a lo-fi vocal that only plays while you hold the pad — perfect for texture drops.
  2. Load a piano chord. Set attack to 400ms, sustain to 100%, release to 600ms. Reverse the sample. You now have a swelling, ambient reverse-piano pad.
  3. Chain: Distortion (drive 60%) → LP Filter (cutoff 40%, resonance 50%) → Reverb (small room, 30% mix). Load an 808 kick. It's now a distorted, filtered, ambient kick that fills space without overpowering.
  4. Stretch a vocal phrase to 2× speed (phase vocoder mode). The vocal becomes a clean, sped-up chipmunk sound. Pitch it down 12 semitones. It's now back at the original pitch but with a glossy, processed texture.
  5. Take any sample. Set the amp ADSR to A=0 D=0 S=100 R=0. It now plays only while held — no attack, no release. Perfect for stutter effects and rhythmic gating.
